POLICY

The aim of this policy is to ensure:

• Parents/guardians and whanau are informed about the schools in our community and the requirements for enrolment at the school of their choice
• The move to school is a smooth transition for both the child concerned and their family.

(Education (Early Childhood Services) Regulations 2008. Regulation 43 Curriculum standard: general (1),(b),(ii),(2) (Criteria C12 & C13).

PROCEDURE

1. Kidz Corner staff will work towards preparing children and their families for a smooth transition between our centre and school.
   We will include in our programme:
   • Routines that encourage self-help, growing independence and positive attitudes towards eating and toileting
   • Opportunities to develop reading, literacy and numeracy skills
   • Opportunities to become confident communicators with their peers in small and large groups
   • Opportunities for children to develop strong social skills, including respect for themselves and others.
2. Kidz Corner will provide information on schools from our area. Parents are required to approach their chosen school to make the appropriate arrangements for their child with regards to enrolment and school visits.
3. Families are encouraged to access the free Before School Check with the Plunket team (phone 04 238 2796 for an appointment).
4. We encourage parents/whanau to celebrate their child's journey at Kidz Corner with a leaving party.
5. We do not hold any information about individual children that can be passed onto schools but we do encourage children and their families to share their profile book with their chosen school.

Worser Bay also run a Rising Fives Club for the year a child turns five. It is held on a Friday afternoon from 2.00-2.45 pm during term time. It is a chance to meet children and teachers, explore the school and be introduced to and become familiar with the learning opportunities they provide.
